A tree was planted in the grounds of County Hall this morning to kick-start The Queen’s Green Canopy, in celebration of Her Majesty’s Jubilee.

The Lord-Lieutenant, Lady Dannatt MBE, was joined by County Council Chairman Councillor Penny Carpenter. The High Sheriff, Mr Michael Gurney DL and Leader of Norfolk County Council, Councillor Andrew Proctor attended to mark the occasion.

The Queen’s Green Canopy is a unique tree planting initiative created to mark Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee in 2022. It invites people from across the United Kingdom to “Plant a Tree for the Jubilee” to create a legacy in honour of The Queen’s leadership.

Lady Dannatt, The Lord-Lieutenant of Norfolk said:

“I am delighted to be joining the Chairman at the tree planting this morning to mark the start of Her Majesty’s historic Platinum Jubilee year.  We have a hugely exciting programme of events planned across the county over the next twelve months, designed to appeal to all age groups, as we come together to celebrate the extraordinary achievements of our much-loved Sovereign.”

Cllr Penny Carpenter, Chairman of Norfolk County Council:

“Her Majesty has had a remarkable impact on our country, her dedication and commitment are as relevant today as it was when Her Majesty was a young woman, she has never faltered, a true inspiration to all of us. The Jubilee is an opportunity to think about how each of us will pay our own tribute. Planting a tree is simple but an enduring act that will be enjoyed for years to come. I would encourage anyone who is able to get a spade in hand and plant a tree for the Jubilee.”

A Judas tree was gifted by Norse’s Total Facilities Management team, who also assisted in the planting.

Irina Lordache, Operations Manager, Norse Commercial Services, said: “Sometimes small gestures mean more than a thousand words. It was an honour for us to gift this tree and to help the Chairman and Lord-Lieutenant in planting it.”

Anyone who wants to plant a tree to mark the Queen’s 70-year reign is encouraged to do so before the end of March to coincide with the tree planting season.

Anyone can get involved, an individual, school, business or community group. You can plant anything from a single tree to small woodland.

Once your tree has been planted you can record it on The Queen’s Green Canopy map online.

For a full guide on which tree to plant, where to get it and how to plant it can be found on The Queen’s Green Canopy website.
